Canning Town North Safer Neighbourhoods Team

Your Safer Neighbourhoods Team is a group of Met police officers dedicated to serving your community. The team is made up of officers based in your area or 'ward', supported by additional officers from the wider area.

We work closely with local authorities, community leaders and residents to decide our policing priorities for the area. This helps us to find useful, long-term solutions to local problems, while maintaining our wider focus on reducing crime across London.

To contact to your team about local policing issues, email us at CanningTownNorth@contact.metengage.co.uk or pick an officer to email below. (Please do not use this contact method to report crime, in an emergency always call 999 or you can report crime online at www.met.police.uk or dial 101).

Local Priority Issues

We are committed to tackling the issues that matter most to local communities. Based on our conversations with residents, and the issues they have raised with us, our main priorities are:

Priority Action taken

ASB :

ASB continues to be a key concern in the ward, particularly around West Ham Tube Station. Incidents include youth-related nuisance, street drinking, verbal abuse, and noise complaints and phone snatches. These behaviours are negatively impacting community well being and increasing the fear of crime

Issued 31 March 2026

Action Taken

• Conduct high-visibility patrols in hotspot areas, particularly during evenings and weekends.
• Work in partnership with local housing associations and the council’s ASB team to issue warning letters, Community Protection Notices (CPNs)
• Encourage residents to report ASB via 101 or online, and signpost them to local support services.
• Utilise CCTV footage to identify repeat offenders and take enforcement action where appropriate.

Phone Snatches

An increase in phone snatching has been noted, particularly around transport interchanges, high streets, and crowded public spaces. Victims are often distracted, and thefts typically involve mobile phones, wallets. These are now particularly focused around Cody Docks area.

Issued 31 March 2026

• Deploy plainclothes and uniformed officers for targeted patrols during peak hours.
• Deploy Plain clothes and Uniformed Cycle officers for targeted Patrols for reassurance
• Work with local transport police and security to raise awareness and share intelligence.
• Promote crime prevention advice via social media, posters, and community events.
• Conduct joint operations with local shops and transport providers.
• Identify and disrupt known offenders using stop and search powers where proportionate and necessary.

Shoplifting

Shoplifting around the new build areas is affecting local businesses. Offenders often include prolific repeat offenders and individuals with substance misuse or mental health needs.

Issued 31 March 2026

• Strengthen relationships with shop staff through regular engagement and Business Watch schemes.
• Use CCTV, body-worn video, and retail intelligence to identify suspects.
• Encourage use of banning notices and civil recovery procedures by businesses.
• Refer repeat offenders to support services where appropriate, or build case files for Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBOs).
• Increase patrols in retail areas and undertake days of action with local partners.
