Burglary Prevention Advice

We are writing to make residents aware of recent burglary offences reported within the local area and to provide crime prevention advice to help keep your home and property secure.

Burglary can have a significant impact on victims, not only through the loss of property but also by affecting their sense of safety and wellbeing. While we continue to investigate reported offences and carry out patrols, there are a number of practical steps residents can take to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim.

Protecting Your Home

Always lock doors and windows, even when you are at home.

Double-lock UPVC doors by lifting the handle and turning the key.

Keep keys out of sight and away from letterboxes and doors.

Consider fitting a letterbox guard to prevent thieves fishing for keys.

Use security lighting and/or CCTV where appropriate.

Ensure side gates, sheds and garages are secured with suitable locks.

Avoid leaving valuable items visible through windows.

Mark and register valuable property using a recognised property marking scheme.

Consider installing a burglar alarm and ensure it is regularly maintained.

Trim hedges and shrubs that could provide cover for offenders.

When Away From Home

Use timer switches on lights to make your property appear occupied.

Ask a trusted neighbour, friend or family member to keep an eye on your property.

Cancel deliveries or arrange for items to be collected.

Avoid advertising holidays or extended absences on social media.

Be Vigilant

Please remain alert for suspicious behaviour within your neighbourhood, including:

Unknown individuals looking into windows or gardens.

Persons trying door handles or gates.

Unfamiliar vehicles repeatedly driving slowly around residential streets.

Individuals carrying items in unusual circumstances or acting suspiciously.

If you witness suspicious activity, please report it to police.

Reporting Crime

Emergency (crime in progress or immediate danger): Call 999

Non-Emergency:

Report online via the Metropolitan Police website.

Call 101.
