Theft From Motor Vehicle – Crime Prevention AdviceTheft from motor vehicles is one of the most common offences and usually happens when offenders spot an easy opportunity. Taking a few simple steps can significantly reduce your risk.
1. Always Lock and Secure Your VehicleAlways lock your vehicle, even if you are stepping away for just a moment. [met.police.uk]Double‑check all windows and sunroof are closed to prevent “fishing” for items.
2. Remove or Hide All ValuablesTake valuables with you whenever possible. Items such as bags, electronics, tools, sunglasses, and loose change attract thieves. If you must leave items behind, hide them out of sight, and ensure no charging cables or device mounts are visible.
3. Keep Your Keys SecureKeep keys away from doors and windows at home, as thieves can use tools to hook or fish keys through letterboxes. [met.police.uk]For keyless entry vehicles, store keys in a signal‑blocking pouch (Faraday bag) to prevent relay theft. [met.police.uk]
4. Protect Tools and Work VehiclesFor vans or work vehicles, remove tools overnight whenever possible.If removal isn’t possible, ensure tools are security marked and listed on an inventory.
