I wanted to provide you an update regarding Shoplifting, which members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. Dear all ,
Your local neighbourhood policing teams from Canning Town North and Canning Town South have been working in partnership with our local retailers , Superdrug, Co-op and Morrisons to address and reduce incidents of retail shoplifting in the area.
Since October, we have increased both visible patrols and covert deployments, focusing on deterrence, early intervention and enforcement. Our officers are working closely with store staff to identify offenders, support victims, and ensure swift investigative action when offences occur.
We are pleased to report positive progress: 📉 Since 1 November, reported shoplifting has reduced from an average of Four incidents per week to just two incidents in the last 17 days.
October had a combined number of 18 offences. So far in November only two reported offences.
This joint initiative highlights the value of collaboration, intelligence-sharing, and community engagement in keeping our high streets safe.
We will continue to: ✔ Maintain proactive patrols ✔ Work with retailers and security teams ✔ Identify and target repeat offenders ✔ Support those who may need help or diversion ✔ Ensure a safe and welcoming shopping environment
Thank you to our partner stores, retail staff and local residents for your ongoing support.
Together, we are making Canning Town safer.
Shoplifting is a crime that can have a substantial negative impact on local businesses across London. If you notice anything suspicious or witness anyone shoplifting, please report it as soon as possible. These reports are invaluable in letting us build a picture of when and where shop lifters operate, meaning we can be in the right place at the right time to arrest those responsible. For more guidance, see our page on how to spot a shoplifter. We are working on our brand-new strategy for how we police London and we want your help. Our New Met for London: Phase 2 strategy will guide how we deliver on behalf of Londoners over the next three years. |
