AUTUMN NIGHTS
As the UK enters the darker months, police urge residents to take extra precautions to deter crime—especially burglary, theft, and personal safety risks.
🏠 Home Security Tips
- Use timer switches to turn on lights before dusk, giving the impression someone is home. - Keep doors and windows locked, even when you're inside. Double-lock UPVC doors and check for snap-resistant locks. - Hide keys and valuables—never leave them near letterboxes, cat flaps, or in view of windows. - Secure sheds and garages, which are often targeted for tools and bikes. - Avoid silent darkness: leave a radio on or use dusk-to-dawn lighting visible from the street. - Trim bushes and keep fences low at the front of your property to improve visibility. - Never leave a spare key outside—burglars know all the hiding spots.
🚶♀️ Personal Safety When Out and About
- Stick to well-lit, busy routes and avoid shortcuts through alleys or isolated areas. - Walk with confidence, stay alert, and avoid distractions like phones or headphones. - Let someone know your route and expected return time, especially if walking alone. - Carry a personal attack alarm—they're inexpensive and widely available. - Vary your jogging or cycling routes and times and avoid wooded or remote areas.
🚗 Vehicle Safety
- Remove valuables from your car, including bags, sat navs, and tools. - Park in well-lit areas or secure garages whenever possible. - Check your locks and ensure your vehicle is properly secured.
👮♂️ Community Awareness
- Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours. - Display signs to deter unwanted callers. - Join or support Neighbourhood Watch schemes and Met Engage to strengthen local vigilance. - Report suspicious behaviour to police or anonymously via Crimestoppers.
