Bromley Superintendent's Update

Good afternoon,

I thought I would write my next message around updating you on policing in Bromley. I have made very clear that we aim to listen to the problems experienced by communities in Bromley around crime and anti-social behaviour, and I can now start to report back on what we've been doing.

Many of you have told us that you have concerns around crime such as shoplifting, drugs and anti-social behaviour which often centres around high streets, but also many other places around the Borough. This is a key aim of the government's “Summer Plans” which we have focussed on here in Bromley to really zone in on these issues.

Our approach has been to look at places being repeatedly affected, and then use precise analysis to work out who the most prolific offenders are causing the majority of this crime. A figure we have quoted before is that in shops in Orpington and the surrounding area that 13 individuals were causing around 80% of the crime. We then focus on these individuals and seek to prosecute them for multiple offences, securing prison sentences and Criminal Behaviour Orders, whilst also trying to work on things like substance dependence which may be contributing to their offending. We have now brought this approach to many other areas of the Borough and will continue to do so. This approach is being rolled out more widely across the Met, with some recent success seeing results in London including:

  • Knife crime down by 18.1 per cent

  • Residential burglary down by 17.7 per cent

  • Theft from the person down by 15.6 per cent

  • Personal robbery down by 12.8 per cent

  • Shoplifting – solved 163 per cent more cases this year

  • We are also seeking to target those who deal drugs to these offenders and to combat the anti-social behaviour caused by drug use. We know that things aren't perfect, and that many areas still have issues but we are doing our best to work on these. If you have any information about crime in your area you can report this to us on the Met website or on crimestoppers. You can also sign up to attend your local Ward Panel meeting and have your voice heard and actively contribute to the policing priorities in your area. We really rely on communities to tell us what is going on and what matters to them which has been instrumental in achieving the results we have seen so far. Thank you for your continued engagement

    Kind regards,
