Live Facial recognition operation - Richmond town centre

I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Anti Social Behaviour, some members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey.

 

On Friday 6th June, officers were deployed throughout the day in Richmond town centre, assisted by officers from the MPS Safer transport command and central teams. This was part of the local summer plan to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the Richmond town centre area.

This was the first deployment within Richmond of the MPS live facial recognition system. This is able to scan and identify passing subjects, and identify persons wanted for outstanding crimes across the MPS. It will also identify subjects with current court orders in place, who can then be spoken to and identify if any breaches of these conditions have occurred.

No individual images of those passing the system are retained, other than those who trigger alerts.

3 arrests were made for subjects wanted for robbery, recall to prison and failing to comply with a community order.

A number of other individuals were stopped and spoken to due to having existing court orders in relation to various issues, all of which were investigated to record any breaches.

We look forward to arranging further operations such as this in the near future, and ensure those that visit Richmond are not doing so to commit crime or ASB.

Antisocial behaviour can come in many forms and can require support from more organisations than just the police. There are 13 different types of antisocial behaviour that we may be able to help with, including abandoned vehicles, littering or drugs paraphernalia and street drinking.
